A man has been arrested after a flag with a "threatening message" was placed on the city walls in York, police have said.

A woman had walked into the pole holding the flag, which was located near Walmgate, at about 12:00 BST on Tuesday, a North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said.

She was then verbally abused and followed by a man, before two other men were believed to have come to her aid.

A 54-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and remained in police custody for questioning, the spokesperson added. Meanwhile officers were appealing for the two men and any other witnesses to come forward with information that could assist the investigation.
