Waste centre wants to extend operating hours
- Published
The company that manages rubbish collections and recycling facilities in Guernsey has applied to extend operating hours at its main waste management centre.
Guernsey Waste wants to vary the previously agreed hours for the site at Longue Hougue.
The original planning permission for the centre stipulated specific operating hours for the Waste Transfer Station, and the Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC).
The States said the application makes no changes to opening hours for customers.
Waste Transfer Station
The station is where waste is taken once it has been collected from by commercial contractors.
If approved, the cut off time for waste being delivered to the transfer station on weekdays would be extended from 12:30 to 16:00.
The site would only receive waste from customers between these times in particular circumstances such as in the event of plant breakdowns or weather disruption, without having to seek special dispensation, according to the States.
The transfer station would also be able to start processing waste from 04:30 Monday to Saturday, instead of the current 06:00.
Waste would also be able to be received routinely on bank holidays, instead of by special arrangement.
This would allow parish waste contractors to drop off household waste when collections coincide with a public holiday.
States Works would also be able to process this material on the day of receipt, between 04:30 and 09:00.
Household Waste & Recycling Centre
At present, under the HWRC’s waste management licence, material can only be received from 07:30 to 20:00, Monday to Friday, and between 08:00 and 17:00 on weekends and bank holidays.
Guernsey Waste has applied to change the Saturday cut off time to 20:00, to align with weekdays.
