Work has begun on a multi-million pound refurbishment of Wolverhampton police station.

The Bilston Street site will remain open and operational for the 16-month duration of the works, the West Midlands force said.

It added the work would improve victim facilities, provide officers with a modern workplace, and would safeguard the future of the building.

Improvements include window replacements, a new heating system, leak repairs, insulation, solar panels, and LED lighting.

Also in the building, which has not been updated since it was opened by Princess Diana in July 1992, will be an employee cafe, run by a local non-profit.

Construction company, Henry Brothers, will employ local people, including apprentices, to undertake the work, in a scheme announced a year ago.
