The council said a mobile, vehicle-activated sign would be used

Mobile signs warning drivers to check their speed are to be installed on a road in Coventry in a bid to tackle speeding motorists.

Coventry City Council's head of network management David Keaney made the pledge in response to a petition calling for action on William Bristow Road, Cheylesmore.

The petition had said the road was used as a bus route and main route and the speed of traffic was "putting the safety of everyone including children at risk".

It claimed a speed reduction monitor on Mount Road had drastically reduced careless driving and said: "If similar measures are enforced here, it will do much to safeguard our community."

A council meeting also heard a refuge could also be installed at the top of William Bristow Road where it meets Daventry Road to help people cross the road.

Mr Keaney said William Bristow Road had been added to the council's mini speed visor programme which will see the deployment of a temporary, mobile vehicle-activated sign.

"These signs are deployed across the city in response to concerns raised over speeding by local residents and are rotated on a rolling programme to sites, in order to highlight driver speed and aid compliance with the speed limit," he said.

He said three signs were moved around the city, adding: "It is looking that it would come back to the site a couple of times each year and that will be quite effective."

He said drivers could become accustomed to signs when they were there all the time.

"If we see a really positive outcome we can always look at introducing a more permanent measure," Mr Keaney added.
