A trial of a new passenger management system, Shuttle ID, has been implemented on secondary school buses in Guernsey.

It works by validating access to school bus services through QR codes and was put in place in response to regular overcrowding on certain services, said the Education Office.

Unique QR codes are provided to each student who has registered to travel on the service and the reader on the bus can scan the code from a device or from a paper print out.

No 'significant issues' were identified during the initial trial, which covered the 17 routes serving Les Beaucamps High School, including six shared with other high schools.

Therefore Shuttle ID will, from the start of term, cover all routes serving Les Beaucamps High School but it has also been extended to a number of routes at other high schools where demand levels exceed the available capacity.

A spokesperson for the Education Office said the system remains under ongoing review and may be extended to other routes within the secondary sector in due course.

Further information, including which services the system is being used on from the start of term, is available on the States website, external.
