About 20 people had to be evacuated from their narrowboats during an overnight fire at a marina.

One boat was destroyed and sank to the bottom of the River Nene during the incident at Northampton Marina on Tuesday morning.

A woman from the sunken boat was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation.

Two other boats sustained light smoke damage.

Fire crews were called to the marina near Victoria Promenade shortly after 05:00 BST.

They found that one boat was well alight and there was a danger of the fire spreading to other craft.

The marina's electricity supply was switched off and about 20 people were evacuated to an office building as a precaution.

Firefighters used water jets to bring the fire under control and stop it spreading, and fans to clear smoke away.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service said the occupants of the boat that sank, including a dog, were accounted for.

The service added: "At the height of the incident, four fire engines were on scene.

"Crews liaised with the owners of the site, the Environment Agency, throughout - and residents who were evacuated were able to return to their boats later in the morning."
