Luton Town has submitted a detailed planning application for its new ground.

The club's development company, 2020 Developments, put in the application for a 25,000 capacity stadium at its Power Court site in the town.

It is hoped that the application will act as a "defining milestone" amid plans to find Luton a sustainable home, the club said.

Gary Sweet, chief executive, said: "This important announcement is a pivotal moment for all supporters, residents and businesses of Luton."

Outline consent was granted in 2019 for a mixed-use development on the land, with the football stadium at its heart.

The application has been submitted to Luton Borough Council and also includes an outline submission for a hotel and music venue.

Officers from the council are due to look at the application, which could take up to two weeks, but after that the documents will be in the public domain.

A spokesperson for the club said if the plans were approved by the council, the target for completion could be 2027.

Michael Moran, chief operating officer of 2020 Developments, said: "Beginning with the original purchase of this site back in 2016, it has been a long process of concluding all the various associated land deals and legal consents, outline planning applications and then the various infrastructure challenges of moving a major sub-station and diverting the River Lea."
