Rescue efforts to free a dog trapped 26ft (8m) into a cliff face were ongoing despite safety concerns over drilling into the rock.

Rose the Jack Russell has been stuck since last Thursday in a steep and slippery section of the cliff between Illingworth and Halifax.

Volunteers involved in the rescue said they had managed to get food and water to Rose, but the rescue operation had been slowed by wet weather.

Local residents, who did not want to be named, told the BBC they were “really concerned” about the rock potentially falling down the hill.

It was still not known how Rose got stuck and it was also not clear when she would be freed, with workers saying the amount of rock between them and Rose was still significant.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service previously said its crews could hear barking when they attended on Thursday, but they could not locate the dog.

They also felt the rock face could not be drilled into without causing structural damage and as a result, they left the rescue in the hands of the dog's owner.
