A service was cancelled after a bag was thrown onto overhead wires at Regent Centre station

A Metro service was suspended after a group of children threw a sports bag on to the overhead wires.

The incident took place at Regent Centre station in Newcastle on Thursday shortly after 15:00 BST.

Northumbria Police were called and officers identified two young people they believed to be responsible.

Train operator Nexus said such actions "cause disruption to the Metro system and can be potentially dangerous".

"The power supply had to be turned off on this section of the Metro line so that our engineers could get access to the wires to remove the obstruction safely," a spokesman for the company said.

The incident led to the service between South Gosforth and Newcastle Airport being suspended from 15:10 to 16:36 BST.

No one has been arrested in connection with the anti-social behaviour, but Northumbria Police said enquiries were continuing.
