Two baby swans have been found dead in Barnsley - one with gunshot wounds to its body.

Police said a third cygnet from the herd of eight had gone missing after the two birds were found in Hoyle Mill Ponds at Dearne Valley Park on 3 and 4 October.

South Yorkshire Police and the RSPCA are appealing for information on the "callous acts".

Lynsey Harris, RSPCA chief inspector for South Yorkshire, said: “It is absolutely disgusting that someone has purposefully targeted and killed these beautiful young birds who would have brought a lot of joy to people visiting this park."

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, all wild birds are protected and it is an offence to kill, injure or take them except under licence.

The maximum penalty, if found guilty, is six months in prison and/or an unlimited fine.
