Police have resumed a search for a woman who disappeared nearly 20 years ago.

Malgorzata Wnuczek, 27, from Poland, was living in Leicester when she went missing on 31 May 2006, with her family last hearing from her in a text two days earlier.

Leicestershire Police said she was last seen catching a bus from her workplace at Peter Jackson Logistics on Sunningdale Road.

A search of scrubland off Great Central Way by forensic specialists has recently begun "following further information received from colleagues in Poland" and information "human remains could be buried in this area", the force said.

As well as an investigation at the time of her disappearance, police issued an appeal for information in 2016 on the 10th anniversary of her disappearance.

The East Midlands Special Operations Unit also conducted searches of the River Soar in 2023 after receiving new information from Polish police.

Det Supt Jenni Greenway, senior investigating officer, said the latest searches "will remain in the area over the coming weeks".

"While I cannot go into specific details at this time, we have received information that human remains could be buried in this area which could potentially help us establish what happened to Malgorzata," she said.

"I remain firm in my belief that there may be people still living in the city who know what happened to her. In particular, I'm extending this appeal to our Polish community.

"For nearly 20 years now, Malgorzata's family have lived their lives not knowing what happened to her and we owe it to them to answer the questions they have."
