Parts of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire saw a spectacular display of the Northern Lights on the first day of the new year.

Splashes of red, green and purple in the skies were captured on camera.

The display was particularly vivid along the coast.

The phenomenon, also known as the aurora borealis, is caused by charged particles from the Sun hitting gases in the Earth's atmosphere.

It is usually seen in regions close to the North Pole.

But 2024 saw a number of displays across the UK as geomagnetic storms battered the Earth.
