A four-vehicle collision has closed the A1 in Northumberland.

Police said it happened on the southbound side close to the turn-off for Shilbottle just south of Alnwick at 07:45 GMT.

Diversions are in place between the A697 and the A1068 with at least one HGV becoming stuck trying to find an alternative route.

A North East Ambulance spokesperson confirmed that one person was taken to hospital.

Deborah Wong from Swarland in Northumberland had to turn around after an HGV became stuck near Hazon.

"Fortunately it wasn't too bad to reroute because I had my baby with me."

"But the lady behind me was travelling from Suffolk and relying on sat nav but the men by the HGV helped her with directions."
