A 21-year-old man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder after another man was stabbed.

Essex Police said the victim, whose condition was now described as stable, was injured inside an address in Stadium Road, Southend-on-Sea, on Sunday, just before 05:00 GMT.

A woman also suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The defendant, who was due to appear before Southend Magistrates' Court on Monday, was also charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, assault by beating, and two counts of intentional strangulation, Essex Police said.

Det Ch Insp Louise Metcalfe said she is "confident there is no ongoing threat to the wider public".

She urged anyone with information which could assist the police's inquiries to come forward.
