Beverley Knight named as theatre's first patron

Knight starred in Marie & Rosetta at Wolverhampton Grand in May, 40 years after performing on the same stage aged 12

A 130-year-old theatre has announced acclaimed soul singer Beverley Knight as its first ever official patron.

Knight said it was an "incredible honour" to take up the role at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre.

Originally from the city, she recently starred in Marie & Rosetta at the Grand, 40 years after performing on the same stage with the city's youth theatre, aged 12.

"I am excited to support the wonderful community projects, like the Memory Café, and help nurture the next generation of performers and audiences, Knight said.

The singer recently performed at the Grand's Memory Café for people living with dementia.

Since finding fame, she has continued to "give back to the community", the theatre said, and has been recognised as with a mural in the city, and a plaque at the venue.

In June, Knight performed at the Grand's Memory Café for people with dementia, and assisted blind and partially-sighted audience members onto the stage to get closer to props and costumes.
