Amazon resubmitted plans for non-illuminated signs to be built at the new warehouse on Melton Business Park

Resubmitted plans for signs on a new Amazon warehouse have been approved after a previous application for illuminated ones was rejected

East Riding of Yorkshire Council turned down proposals in August on the grounds of unnecessary light pollution to the area and the impact on people living close to Melton Business Park near North Ferriby.

Following that decision, Amazon applied to display four non-illuminated signs to the north, south and west elevations of the building and one illuminated sign in its interior.

A decision notice approving the revised plans was published last week.

Up to 2,000 jobs are expected to be created at the facility, which is part of the retailer's £40bn investment to expand in the UK over the next three years.

However, plans for the building, which were approved in December 2021, attracted more than 1,300 objections, with the subsequent application for illuminated signage sparking a backlash from those living nearby.

The decision notice rejecting the illuminated signs stated they would add "unnecessary light pollution to the area" and would detract from the living conditions of neighbouring residents.

Councillor Paul Hopton previously told a meeting there were no objections to the signs, just them being lit up.

He said any drivers "looking for this place" needed to consider a new career if they were unable to find it without illuminated signage.

The approval of the latest application comes with the condition that the signage, other than the one at the main entrance, should "remain non-illuminated for the lifetime of the development", according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service,
