A nine-mile stretch of a major road is set to be closed for two weekends for £1.7m of planned works.

National Highways says resurfacing work on the A34 means the northbound carriageway will be shut between the A34/M4 Chieveley Interchange in west Berkshire to the A4185 Chilton Junction, near Didcot, Oxfordshire.

The closures will be in place from 21:00 BST on the Friday until 06:00 on the Monday.

The first will be between 27-30 June, and the second from the 4-7 July.

An earlier closure from 16-19 May will be just overnight on those dates, from 21:00 to 06:00.

National Highways said there would be two diversion routes in place.

The first goes via the M4 and then the M40, and will be suitable for car and HGV drivers.

The second goes via the A338 and then the A417, but is unsuitable for large vehicles.

National Highways apologised and said weekend work was chosen because it was the least disruptive option.
