A woman was left badly shaken following a robbery on the Ormeau Road area of south Belfast on Saturday.
The woman, who is in her 20s, reported that she was crossing at the junction of Candahar Street, shortly after 15:10 GMT, when an unknown male snatched her black leather bag from her shoulder.
The female chased the man as he made off towards Burmah Street, police said.
The male reportedly pointed a suspected handgun at the woman before he made off in the direction of Parkmore Street.
The woman received a cut to her knee following the incident.
The male is described as of thin build and wearing grey tracksuit bottoms, a black zipped up coat and wearing grey, black and white trainers with a baby blue tick on them.
"Enquiries are continuing and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have any information which could assist with the investigation to contact detectives," Det Sgt Faulkner said.
South Belfast SDLP councillor Gary McKeown condemned the reported robbery, saying he was "appalled" at the incident and "extremely concerned" at reports that a suspected handgun was pointed at the victim.
He added: "This is a very busy and popular part of the city, particularly on a Saturday afternoon with many people including families in the area, so for an attack like this to happen is very shocking."
