A man has been given a suspended sentence for driving while disqualified and also having alcohol in his system.

Lee Llewelyn, 34, of Pearl Close, Knaresborough, pleaded guilty at Skipton Magistrates’ Court on Friday to driving while over the prescribed limit, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

He had been seen acting suspiciously in a white Nissan Juke car that was parked in a lay-by on the A59 at Haw Park House to Holme Lane at around 16.50 BST on 5 August 2024, before then driving off.

Traffic Constable David Minto called him "selfish, irresponsible and dangerous".

"The defendant clearly has no regard for other road users," he said.

“Despite being handed a two-year disqualification for failing to provide a specimen following a damage-only collision in Knaresborough on 15 May, he chose to drive a vehicle three months later.

“Not only that he was drunk whilst doing so – more than double the limit."

The officer said the force would "never tire" of putting "selfish, irresponsible and dangerous individuals" before the courts.

TC Minto was alerted to the scene after Llewelyn was seen driving off in the direction of Bolton Abbey and then found his vehicle at 17:08 BST.

He flashed the blue lights at him and instructed him to pull over, however Llewelyn did stop at first.

The car was stopped at 17:20 on White Wall Lane towards Harrogate, and Llewelyn took a roadside breath test.

The reading showed him as having 84 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, when the legal limit is 35 micrograms of alcohol.

He was arrested for this offence, before being later charged with the other two offences.

Llewelyn was given a 12-week suspended sentence and ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid work, as well carry out rehabilitation activities and alcohol treatment.

He was also disqualified from driving for three years and after that, Llewelyn will then need to take an extended driving test before being allowed on the roads again.
