Plans for golf course underpass approved

The plans would see an underpass constructed under Ballacutchel Road

Plans to build an underpass to connect two parts of a golf course in the south of the Isle of Man have been approved.
The proposals would see a tunnel, with a width and height of 2.5m (8.2ft), installed under Ballacutchel Road near the Comis Hotel in Mount Murray.
Designed to be big enough for pedestrians, golf buggies and course machinery, the tunnel would, according the planning application, provide a "direct, safe connection between the two halves of the course".
It was a "vital" part of upgrade works to improve the course, which would be the primary golf venue during the 2029 Island Games, the application added.
The planning officer who recommended approval said the proposal was of an "overriding national importance" given its role in the Island Games.
Furthermore, the plans would have a limited visual impact and would enhance highway safety in the area, the planning officer added.
A spokesman for the golf course said it would take approximately six to eight weeks for the underpass to be constructed, with the work to start "as soon as possible".
A planning committee unanimously approved the proposals in a meeting on Monday.
