Work to transform a West Yorkshire market square has been finished ahead of a UK City of Culture event later this month.

The work at Shipley Market Square has seen fixed market stalls removed to create an open space.

The location will host the Bloom event on 26-27 September, which is described as a "large-scale circus performance celebrating the spirit of Bradford and its people".

The renovations, funded through the government-backed Shipley Towns Fund, include large canopies in the centre of the square, new seating and raised planters.

Work to re-open public toilets next to the square is continuing, the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) said.

Future markets will take place at pop-up stalls and gazebos, with the larger public space used to host community events.

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council's executive member for regeneration, planning and transport, said: "It has completely transformed the centre.

"By creating an inviting and flexible space, we hope to increase footfall, support our shops and restaurants, and help businesses to thrive."

Tracy Brabin, West Yorkshire's elected mayor, said: "This is about more than just bricks and mortar – it's about creating a place where culture can flourish, local businesses can thrive, and families can feel proud to spend time together."

The £3m market development, delivered by Bradford Council, was funded through the Shipley Towns Fund – a £25m pot to regenerate the area.

A further £1m came from Streets for People funding through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
