A Reclaim the Night march and Safer Nights event is to be held in Scunthorpe to highlight concerns over violence and misogyny towards women and girls.

The event will bring together representatives from night-time economy venues and taxis, takeaways and hotels.

Following speeches at the start of the event at Church Square, there will be a procession up to the high street.

The event on 25 October has been organised by North Lincolnshire Council, who say it will be an opportunity "to come together in solidarity".

The authority has introduced a number of initiatives to try to improve safety for women, including a WalkSafe app, the Ask Angela scheme - a code-phrase used to indicate someone is in need of help - and SOS points.

The council said many of the night-time economy venues in North Lincolnshire are members of Pubwatch and have signed an online safety at night charter.

The authority said the event was a chance for both men and women to come together in solidarity to speak out against misogyny, sexual violence, hate misogyny and harassment in public settings.

Reclaim the Night, which started in the UK in 1977, campaigns against sexual violence and harassment from men.

Jonathan Evison, Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “The Safer Nights initiative is a great project to ensure residents and visitors in our area can safely enjoy the night-time economy.

"The Reclaim the Night event will strengthen the work that is already being done to help end violence against women and girls.”
