Five people have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 26-year-old man was stabbed to death in the early hours.

The victim was killed in Norton, Stockton-on-Tees, shortly after 00:00 BST, Cleveland Police said.

He died at the scene of the attack, which took place outside a house on Hills Drive.

An eyewitness said the man had been banging on doors asking for help, before he collapsed.

Police say formal identification is yet to take place but his family are being supported by specially trained officers.

Jeff Rochford tried to save the man after he heard a scream

Jeff Rochford heard a scream in the street and ran out to see the man on the floor outside his neighbour's house.

His neighbour said he thought the victim had "had a good kicking", but Mr Rochford said he saw a "pool of blood" as he lifted him into the recovery position.

"Obviously I thought he's been stabbed," he said. "So I flung him on his back and started CPR straight away."

Multiple crime scenes have been set up, and officers remain in the area, urging any witnesses to come forward.
