The M6 motorway is closed due to a police incident.

Police were called to junction 27 at Standish, near Wigan, at 01:25 BST.

All southbound lanes are closed between junctions 27 and 26 (Skelmersdale) while investigations continue.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said "significant delays" were expected in the "immediate future".

The force also appealed for anyone with information, or any relevant video footage, to get in touch.

A diversion is in place according to National Highways.

The agency added: "Closure is expected to remain in place throughout the morning for complex investigation works."
