Police say their search is continuing in Burton upon Trent after reports of a man in the river at Stapenhill Gardens.

An aerial search has been carried out on a stretch of the River Trent and Staffordshire Police said it was trying to establish what had happened after receiving alerts at about 16:30 GMT on Wednesday.

Officers were told a man, in his 50s with grey hair wearing a blue hoodie and black jogging bottoms, was seen entering the river, but said so far no one had been found.

The force said an aircraft from the National Police Air Service supported officers, who were reviewing CCTV and carrying out house-to-house enquiries.

Staffordshire Police added it had not received any reports of missing persons matching the description given.

All lines of inquiry would be explored, the force said, and appealed for any witnesses or anyone with CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage to make contact on 101 or via the police website.
