A council has described the discovery of an abandoned tyre-filled lorry trailer as a "reckless act of environmental vandalism".

The trailer, filled with seven to eight tonnes of old tyres, was found in a lay-by off the A1307 near Haverhill, Suffolk.

West Suffolk Council said the removal of the trailer came at a "considerable cost" due to its "poor and unroadworthy condition".

David Taylor, cabinet member for operations, said: "Illegal dumping undermines our collective efforts to maintain clean and healthy communities."

He added: "This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper waste disposal practices and the need for community vigilance in combating fly-tipping."

The tyres had to be unloaded and taken for correct processing.

Anyone with information regarding the trailer or those involved in its abandonment is urged to assist the council in its investigations.
