Organisers of a centuries-old riding event reflecting conflicts between England and Scotland say they hope a record number of horses will take part this year.

The Riding of the Bounds in Berwick-upon-Tweed is in its 415th year and recreates the patrolling of boundaries between the two countries.

It traditionally took place on 1 May, but was moved to the Saturday of the bank holiday weekend to boost numbers.

The highest recorded number of riders is 97, but chairman of the Berwick Riders Association Linda Fiddes hopes to hit "100 or more this year".

"It's such a fantastic event and it's so important for the people of Berwick that we keep it going because it is such an important part of our identity," she added.

Hundreds of people line the streets of Berwick to watch the riders

The riders follow a 17-mile route from Berwick up to the border with Scotland, with the horses galloping certain sections of the ride.

About half the people who take part hire a horse for the day, which can cost up to £250 - a price tag Mrs Fiddes fears may put some people off.

"It is an expensive day if you don't have your own horse and with the weather we've been having it's been hard to get horses fit, but we have nearly 70 registered and quite a few people turn up on the day," she said.

Laura Hunter was inspired to learn to ride after seeing her daughter take part

Laura Hunter has spent a year learning to ride having been inspired by seeing her daughter take part in 2023.

"It's been really hard work, with lessons every week," she said.

"I'm nervous and excited but determined to do it, because it's something extra special that helps keep the town going."
