Two buildings are being bulldozed as work gets under way to regenerate a town centre.

The former Marks and Spencer’s and Goodwins in Redcar are being pulled down to make way for a new family entertainment venue.

Redcar and Cleveland Council said the project was being funded from £25m government cash awarded in 2021.

Jenny Archer, of the Redcar Town Deal Board, said the project would be "transformational" for the High Street.

The plans include a Culture and Leisure Anchor Attraction on the Esplanade.

Ms Archer said: "Unfortunately over the last few years, due to businesses moving out the buildings have become dilapidated.

"The board feels the area could be put to much better use by developing it into public spaces.

"The new family-friendly venue will be transformational for the high street and will significantly increase the number of residents and visitors using the town centre."

Improvements to the town's High Street will also include new street furniture and landscaping with plants and trees.

The council also said that Queen Street would be pedestrianised.
