Shops in the city centre have reported an increase in petty crime

New dispersal powers could be rolled out in Wolverhampton city centre.

The proposals aim to reduce antisocial behaviour as shops report an increase in petty thefts.

If approved, police would have the authority to order groups of three or more people to leave the area if they were causing a "nuisance, threat or alarm to others", City of Wolverhampton Council said.

The move would also allow officers to ask individuals to remove face coverings when there are no reasonable grounds to wear them.

The Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) would initially be put in place for three years and would come into effect during spring 2024, if plans are approved.

"These prohibitions would not affect legitimate groups of friends gathering to shop or visit the city centre and make use of the night-time economy," a spokesperson for the council said.

The authority added that the order would not discriminate against people who wore a face covering for medical reasons or for religious purposes, such as Niqab or Burkas.

Along with the city centre, the order would cover the inner ring road area.

Residents have been asked to take part in public consultation, which is open until 31 March.
