Birmingham canal-side apartments approved

A new canal-side community made up of 234 apartments has been approved close to Birmingham city centre.

The flats, on land north of Icknield Square in Ladywood, are to be housed in three interlinked blocks ranging from four to 10-storeys high.

The plans were passed at the city council's planning committee on Thursday.

A report for the authority said a large number of units would be suitable for couples and small families and provide "significant public realm and access benefits".

These include a new public plaza and cycling and walking connections between Icknield Square and the Main Line canal.

"This would thereby deliver large improvements to the canal-side environment, which are seen as highly positive," the council officer's report continued.

Speaking at the planning meeting, councillor Lee Marsham said: "I think it’s a good use of brownfield land and the improvements to the canal are to be noted."

The council's report suggested the development was approved on the condition 10% of properties were affordable housing.

This was despite the council seeking a minimum 35% of affordable housing on major developments.

A detailed assessment concluded the lower percentage would offer "the greatest benefit to the city", the report said and added plans were supported by the affordable housing team.

The council's planning committee approved the proposals unanimously.
