A murder investigation has been launched after a woman was found dead in Plymouth.

Police said a man had been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman in her 50s was found dead at a house in Rendle Street.

Police were called to the house at about 19:30 GMT on Monday.

A man in his 60s, from Plymouth, is in police custody. A 36-hour extension was granted by Exeter Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Det Insp Neil Blanchard said: "At this time we believe this to be an isolated incident and the parties known to each other."

He warned residents there would be an increased police presence in the area for the next day or two while officers conducted inquiries.

The woman's next-of-kin have been informed but formal identification has not taken place.

He asked anyone with any information about the incident to call 101, quoting crime reference 50240065531, or by calling Crimestoppers, external on 0800 555 111.
