Concerns raised over accident blackspot junction
- Published
Motorists are demanding changes to a major road junction which has been plagued by a high number of accidents.
There have been 26 reported accidents in the last two years at Switch Island junction in Aintree, Merseyside, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.
The M57, M58 and three A roads combine at the junction, which has been labelled an accident blackspot.
Road users have blamed the accidents on motorists jumping red lights and confusing signs. National Highways said further safety measures are being considered.
'Meltdown'
Motorist Paula Scanlon said red light jumpers are "the main problem" and many people find the junction "very confusing".
Fellow road user Rebecca Wainwright said some red lights "change too quickly".
Chris Carlsen said: “Accidents seem to be a daily occurrence."
Another motorist, Mick Clarke, said the whole set-up leads to "people getting frustrated so they take chances".
Kate McMullin added: “You are forever second-guessing what the driver to the side of you is going to do, as you see them look nervously at their sat nav, which has gone into meltdown.
“So then you are faced with making allowances for other drivers who don’t know where they are going. It is literally a recipe for disaster."
National Highways said: “Safety is our top priority and we’re exploring options for further potential additional safety measures at the junction.”
