Sausages strewn over motorway after lorry overturned

The HGV came to rest across the northbound carriageway near Bicester in the early hours

A crash involving an overturned lorry left a cargo of sausages strewn across the M40 northbound in Oxfordshire.

The HGV ended up across the carriageway between junction 9 for Bicester and junction 10 for Brackley. Police said the driver suffered a minor injury.

The road reopened after 18:00 BST following a 13-hour operation.

Urgent repairs were carried out on the central reservation and the scene cleared.

When it reopened National Highways said there were delays of about 60 minutes for motorists approaching southbound.

It said the lorry, which had been travelling on the southbound carriageway, went through the central reservation and ended up on the northbound carriageway where it hit a bridge support.

Thames Valley Police confirmed no-one was seriously injured in the incident.

In a post on social media, the force's roads policing team said the HGV had been transporting sausages, which had been left "scattered across the road".

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews arrived to find a lorry on its side and "released the driver who was trapped".

It added "thankfully nobody was seriously injured" and crews left the driver in the care of South Central Ambulance Service.
