Builder admits causing death by dangerous driving

A builder has been told to expect a jail sentence after admitting causing the death of an 83-year-old man by dangerous driving.
Thomas De Lacy, from Luton, died in November 2021 a week after his car was hit on the A507 near Maulden, Bedfordshire.
Luton Crown Court heard Jason Briars, 54, had been drinking when his Transit struck Mr De Lacy's blue Corsa, travelling the other way.
Lawyers for Briars, of Ampthill Road, Flitwick, said he “indicated a guilty plea at the first opportunity”.
His barrister Charles Langley told the court there had been long delays in the case, with Mr Briars "voluntarily interviewed" in July 2022.
Mr De Lacy, of Trinity Road, died of his injuries on 13 November 2021, but Briars was not charged until November 2023.
Mr Langley said: “The defendant is a man of previous good character with a good driving record.
“He knows he will receive a long custody sentence.”
Briars will be sentenced on 15 March.
