Sports clubs are being urged to play their part in improving pitches.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is developing a scheme to cover cricket, football, rugby, hockey, tennis, athletics and bowls.

Surveys are being posted out to clubs, schools, councils and other organisations that provide pitches.

Improvements will be made based on the feedback.

The Playing Pitch Strategy will be developed over the next five years on behalf of Sport England and national governing bodies, including the Football Association.

The strategy aims to protect, improve and grow playing pitch provision, as well as to support funding bids and planning applications.

'Access to funding'

It will also support community use of pitches and the health and well-being of residents, while encouraging sustainable maintenance.

Councillor Nick Coultish, cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, said: "In some cases being included may be necessary for organisations to access funding, so it's really important that they complete the survey and return it to us as soon as possible."
