The University of Bradford is bringing science to the masses by holding lectures in pubs and cafes.

The university is taking part in the annual Pint of Science festival which introduces scientific research to the public in an informal setting.

Among the topics covered in this week's event are the health effects of pollution and how 1.5 billion tyres are dumped every year.

The events are part of the university's commitment to ensuring knowledge is not confined to the laboratory and academic circles.

University of Bradford associate professor Jacobo Elies urged anyone interested to "grab a drink and join the conversation"

Jacobo Elies, associate professor in the Faculty of Life Sciences, said: “Pint of Science is a testament to the university's commitment to public engagement and science communication.

"It's ensuring that knowledge is not just confined to academic circles but shared widely and enthusiastically with the community.

"So, grab a drink and join the conversation, because science is for everyone, and it's happening right at your local hangout.”

BrewDog Bradford and Cafe Liza, both on Great Horton Road, are staging sessions.

BrewDog assistant manager Jordan Slinn said: "Over the past few months me, a few members of staff and my manager have developed really good relations with Bradford College and the University of Bradford.

"Through that they've decided to host the event here as it's obviously a social space and they want to create a social event around science."

Each session costs £5 which is for two talks.

Among the lectures being held are:

  • Mass Destruction: The Science of Irregular Warfare with Dr Becky Alexis-Martin.

  • Re-Walking the City: People with Dementia Remember with Dr Andrea Capstick

  • Under the Microscope: Exploring the Bugs on our Hands with Dr Sara Henderson.

  • Nanoparticles in Cancer Therapy: Small by Mighty with Dr Amalia Ruiz.

Pint of Science is a non-profit organisation that runs lectures across the country.
