Surrey Highways says the surface of the A22 Caterham bypass needs replacing

A "significant" fuel spillage in Surrey has forced the closure of the A22 Caterham bypass until at least Thursday.

The road was closed on Sunday night and diversions caused delays for motorists throughout the following day.

On Monday evening, Surrey Highways said on social media that the closure between Caterham and Godstone would remain in place to allow emegency repairs to be carried out.

It said: "Due to the volume and scale of the spillage, the only solution is to resurface the road."

'Night works'

Surrey Highways said the A22 will be closed north and southbound from Wapses Lodge roundabout to junction 6, M25 from Monday night until crews had safely carried out the works.

Its statement said: "Over the next few days, we will require full access to remove the contaminated surface area and replace with 4,600 square metres of new road.

"This will require night works, with possible noise disruption following the urgency of the repair, with 15 crews on site and 46 lorries working to reopen the network as quickly and as safely as possible.

"We apologise in advance for the disruption.

"We anticipate the works to be completed by Thursday, 16 May, midday."

A Surrey Police spokesman said: "Motorists are being asked to avoid the A22 between Caterham and Godstone due to a significant fuel spillage which occurred last night.

"A number of closures are currently in place around the area while the clean-up operation takes place. This is likely to take some time."
