North Yorkshire schools will be able to apply for more funding to subsidise the cost of installing charge points for electric vehicles, the government has announced.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has given the region £5.3m in a move it says will encourage more drivers to switch to electric vehicles.

Under the scheme, schools can apply for a grant to cover up to three quarters of the cost of installing charge points, up to a limit of £2,500 a socket.

North Yorkshire is one of five local authority areas to benefit from the rollout.

State-funded schools, colleges, nurseries and academies are all entitled to apply for the grant, as long as they have off-road parking facilities, the DfT said.

Bedford, East Sussex and the London boroughs of Hackney and Hounslow are the other four local authorities to be covered by the funding.
