A £1 entry fee has come into effect on Brighton's Palace Pier.

The pier's operators said it is needed to cover the increasing costs of maintenance and operating the attraction, which have now reached £11.6m a year.

Some Brighton and Hove residents and children under two are exempt.

Annual passes costing up to £95 are also available.

The charge will be in place during peak trading periods in the summer and over the weekends during June, and then throughout July and August.

The Brighton Pier Group said running costs had increased by £2.7m in the last five years.
