A plan to move a rugby clubhouse and training pitch to make space for a development of 120 new homes in St Ives has been given the green light.

The development will consist of 50 new homes and 70 care units, all of which will be affordable.

The plan was unanimously agreed at Cornwall Council's Strategic Planning Committee meeting on Thursday.

St Ives Town Council said the application "ticked all boxes" to help provide 120 homes in the town and secure the rugby club's future, and described it as a "nice Christmas present".

The National Landscape Office had objected to the proposed development as it would be in a designated area of exceptional natural beauty.

In Thursday's meeting the rugby club said the plan would help secure its future through having upgraded facilities.

The new clubhouse will be built to the west of the main pitch with the new training pitch to the west of it.

The social care units and homes will be built on the western part of the existing training pitch.
