The road leading to a city bridge has been shut for gas works, causing traffic delays in the area.

Weirs Lane in Oxford, which connects Donnington Bridge with Abingdon Road, has been closed in both directions to facilitate a gas main replacement.

Drivers who want to travel west over the bridge are being advised to continue down to Iffley Road.

Southern Gas Network (SGN), which is carrying out the work, said it hoped to remove the temporary traffic restrictions by 27 September.

Oxfordshire County Council said limited access would be maintained for emergency service vehicles and for frontages within the closed section of road.

Bradley Barlow, spokesperson for SGN, said the company was working to replace its old metal gas mains with a new plastic pipe.

"In consultation with Oxfordshire County Council, we're temporarily closing Weirs Lane for approximately two weeks between its junctions with Abingdon Road and Canning Crescent," he said.

"All being well, we hope to complete our upgrade and remove our temporary traffic restrictions by Friday 27 September."

SGN apologised for any inconvenience caused to the community.
