The water supplier apologised to its customers as it works to fix the outage

Thousands of homes in a Kent town have been affected after a water main burst.

Southern Water said 3,400 properties in Chatham experienced a loss of pressure and intermittent outages after it received reports of a burst main in New Road Avenue shortly after 17:00 BST on Wednesday.

Areas hit by the interruption included the historic dockyard, the Brook and City Way.

The water company said it had isolated the leak and restored supplies to all but 30 properties at around 21:15.

Repairs to the water main will likely be challenging due to the location and proximity of a bridge, said a Southern Water spokesperson.

It was "impossible to say how long the fix will take until we have got traffic management in and carried out the dig," they added on Wednesday evening.

Water tankers were heading to Chatham to inject into the network, the spokesperson continued.

The water company apologised to customers affected by the disruption.
