Man arrested on suspicion of rape

A man has been arrested following the rape of a woman in York.

North Yorkshire Police confirmed the incident took place in the early hours of this morning in the New Walk area, between Skeldergate Bridge and Blue Bridge.

The area was closed off and a scene guard was put in place to allow investigators to examine the scene.

Officers said a man, 19, had been arrested on suspicion of rape and remained in custody.

Extensive enquiries are continuing into the incident and the victim is receiving support from specially trained officers, a spokesperson for the force said.

Officers have also appealed for anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity between 02:00 BST and 04:15 BST in the riverside area, Clifford’s Tower and Tower Street.
