Fourteen classrooms will be added to the school under the new proposals

A school in West Sussex is to be given 14 new classrooms after plans for a two-storey extension were approved by councillors.

On Tuesday the planning committee at Crawley Borough Council signed off on a proposal which will also see a glazed bridge link added to St Wilfrid's School in Southgate.

The secondary school has an intake of 1,172 students, which will rise to 1,218 once its sixth-form is at full capacity.

A shortage of secondary places in the county saw the school take on 'bulge' classes in 2023 and 2024, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The proposed 14 classrooms will provide additional teaching capacity and replace teaching accommodation lost within the main building as a result of internal alterations.

Conversion of existing general teaching spaces are proposed to address accommodation deficiencies in Science and ICT.
