A 24-hour police base is set to replace a Coventry station deemed by a crime commissioner as not fit for purpose.

The neighbourhood and response policing teams at Canley station, south-west of the city, will relocate to a new and improved headquarters on nearby Bow Court.

The current police building, off Fletchamstead Highway, will be sold before the move will take place.

West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster, said the plans mean officers will "remain within the community they serve".

Ch Supt Paul Drover, who oversees policing in Coventry, said: “Officers will be relocating to a newer base in the area which will support local neighbourhood officers, response teams and a pro-active unit.

"The move will see further investment in technology and equipment while ensuring a police presence for local communities.”

Mr Foster said any money made from the sale of the current building, which he said was "not fit for purpose", will be reinvested in the area.

“Canley will continue to have a reassuring, strong and visible West Midlands Police presence, that will be committed and dedicated to preventing and tackling crime and to keeping people, families, businesses and the local community, safe and secure," he explained.
