Road to be shut for about seven hours for big load

A 356-tonne generator is back on the move after its journey was previously postponed.

Heavy haulage operator Allelys was due to move the 81-metre (266ft) long abnormal load through Suffolk on 11 August, but cancelled the journey due to operational issues.

It will now be moved on Sunday, from Ipswich Docks at 09:00 BST, heading to the Synchronous Condenser Plant in Yaxley.

The A140 will be closed for about seven hours and a diversion will be in place. However, Suffolk Highways, external warned timings were subject to change.

A temporary overbridge will also be installed on the carriageway at Brockford to protect the road and structure.

Once the load has safely passed through the area, the overbridge will be dismantled.

Highway teams will be leading and following the abnormal load as well as preparing the route.

They will be temporarily moving and reinstating street furniture while a rolling police roadblock is expected on the A14 eastbound.

Paul West, Suffolk County Council's operational highways and flooding cabinet member, urged drivers to avoid the affected areas.

  • Negotiate Fore Hamlet to Derby Road, travelling along Felixstowe Road

  • Negotiate Derby Road to Foxhall Road via Tomline Road

  • Negotiate St Helens Street, St Margarets Street, Crown Street to St Matthews Street roundabout

  • Negotiate St Matthews Street, Norwich Road to Bury Road/Old Norwich Road junction

  • Negotiate A140 to Synchronous Condenser Plant in Yaxley

A second abnormal load - a 164-tonne electrical transformer - was due to take place but a date has yet to be confirmed.
