Dog destroyed after biting two police officers

The officers were bitten by the dog at a home on Reaseheath Way, Nantwich, police said

A dog which bit and injured two police officers has been destroyed, their force said.

The officers were at a home on Reaseheath Way, Henhull, Nantwich, on Friday, as part of an investigation, Cheshire Police said.

When they were there, the dog bit them, causing injuries which needed hospital treatment.

Attempts were made to control the animal by sedating it but these did not work and the dog was subsequently destroyed, the force said.

A 33-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of having a dangerously out of control dog.

Det Supt Adam Waller said it was a "distressing incident" and officers did all they could to bring the dog under control.

But he added the force's priority was the safety "of our officers and members of the public and due to the immediate risk posed, the decision was made to destroy the dog".

"This was not a decision which was taken lightly," he added.

"We would like to reassure the local community that this is an isolated incident."
