An investigation is under way after a section of promenade collapsed.

Part of the deck at Seaham, County Durham, came away overnight on Wednesday, and the footpath has been partially closed.

Durham County Council said it shut the southern section of the path from the steps down from North Road to Featherbed Rocks "in the interests of public safety."

It said it was investigating the cause of the collapse and added repairs would be carried out "as soon as possible".

A spokesman said: "The rest of the promenade remains open but we apologise for any inconvenience caused by the partial closure."
