A body found on a Merseyside beach has been confirmed as that of a 77-year-old man who went missing after his car was found next to a river bank.

George Norwell was last seen in the Swift Close area of Whittle-le-Woods, Lancashire, at 09:30 BST on Saturday.

His blue Ford Focus was later found close to the River Ribble, to the south of Preston, at the corner of Boulevard and Esplanade, Lancashire Police said.

Emergency services were then called to reports of a man found dead on Southport beach at about 10:30 BST on Monday.

Lancashire Police said Mr Norwell's family had been informed and were being supported.

"This is not the outcome that anyone wanted, and our thoughts are with George's family at this distressing time," the force said.
