Repair work has started on a Derbyshire road which was closed after several sinkholes appeared.

Union Road Bridge in New Mills was shut on Saturday morning and water supply firm United Utilities carried out an investigation into the issue.

It was confirmed a collapsed culvert had caused the sewer beneath the bridge to be damaged, which led to the sinkhole appearing.

The company said it is now in the process of completing repairs of the sewer, before handing the site back to Derbyshire County Council, which is responsible for repairing the culvert, a tunnel that typically channels surface water underground.

United Utilities said repairs are expected to be completed by Friday and apologised for any inconvenience caused by the works.

Pictures shared on social media at the weekend showed water streaming down Union Road following the closure.
